Good Monday to all of you. I pray that our friends up north and in the mid-west are all safe from all the bad weather that has been going though that area. And our new friends we met last year as well as my son Tim’s wife sister and family who are stationed in Hawaii are safe from all the storms that have hit the islands.
There has been so much talk this year about “El Nino” I thought I would look it up and find out why it is so important.
What El Niño Means
El Niño is a natural climate pattern in the tropical Pacific Ocean that occurs roughly every 2–7 years as part of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) cycle It is the warm phase of ENSO, the opposite of La Niña (the cool phase).
How It Works
Under normal conditions, east–west trade winds blow across the equator, pushing warm surface water toward Asia and allowing cooler, nutrient-rich water to rise from the deep ocean along the west coast of South America NOAA’s National Ocean Service.
During El Niño, these trade winds weaken, allowing warm water to drift back east toward the Americas. This causes sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific to rise by at least 0.5°C above average for at least five consecutive overlapping three-month periods
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration+1.
Why It Matters
Warmer ocean water transfers more heat into the atmosphere, altering global atmospheric circulation. This can shift the Pacific jet stream, change rainfall patterns, and influence temperatures worldwide. This is just a simple explanation, I thought someone might be interested.
